Papermill Maintenance
Specialized maintenance and outage services for the pulp and paper industry — covering digesters, evaporators, recovery boilers, washers, press rolls, and associated mechanical systems.
Pulp and paper mills operate continuous processes where scheduled shutdowns — "paper machine downtime" — must be used with maximum efficiency and unplanned failures carry enormous production cost. MAC Industrial Services has direct experience maintaining the specialized equipment of the pulp and paper process: kraft recovery boilers, chemical recovery smelt systems, multi-effect evaporators, digesters, lime kilns, bleach plant equipment, and the paper machine itself.
Recovery boiler maintenance is perhaps the most safety-critical discipline in the papermill environment. A recovery boiler explosion caused by water contact with smelt is among the most dangerous industrial accidents possible. MAC's crews are trained in the specific hazards of black liquor-fired recovery boiler work, including the lockout, draining, and purging procedures required before entry, and the tube inspection and replacement techniques used on the furnace walls, superheaters, and generating bank.
Beyond recovery boilers, MAC provides maintenance services across the entire mill — from digester pressure vessel repairs and evaporator tube bundle cleaning and replacement, to paper machine press roll and dryer section mechanical maintenance, and piping and structural work throughout. Our teams work within the compressed shutdown windows typical of paper mills, with the craft depth to run multiple concurrent work packages efficiently.
What We Deliver
Technical Q&A
What are the unique hazards of working in a kraft recovery boiler?
The primary hazard is water-smelt explosions, which occur if water contacts molten smelt (a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium sulfide that pools at the boiler floor). All MAC crews working in or around recovery boilers are trained on BLRBAC safe firing guidelines, the specific lockout and draining procedures required before entry, and the emergency procedures for water intrusion events.
Can MAC execute paper machine maintenance within a weekend shutdown window?
Yes. Paper machine shutdowns are often 48–72 hours, and MAC has planned and executed complex mechanical maintenance scopes within these windows. Success depends on detailed pre-planning: all materials staged, work packages written, and crews briefed before the machine goes down. MAC project managers specialize in this type of compressed-window execution.
